About The Artists |
Barry Payne and the Long Shadows Website We are delighted that Barry Payne and his band the Long Shadows will be making their debut at the Country Soul in Soho. Mr Payne & the Long Shadows are a North London Rock 'N' Roll band that draw influences from a heady mix of proto-punk, powerpop, americana and gypsy folk all shaken up with a dash of glam rock. Centred around former Wreckless Eric and Eileen Rose bassist, Barry Payne, the Long Shadows are Nick Simms (drums), Pat McCarthy (bass), Chris Burrows (guitar) and Toby Baker (keys). The band with their melodic songs have gained comparisons to The Replacements, The Clash and even Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance. |
Helen McCookerybook Website We are extremely pleased that Helen McCookerybook will be returning to the Country Soul. Helen was a founder member of The Chefs and Helen and the Horns, both of whom were favs of the legendary John Peel. After a long break Helen returned to performing as a solo artist, recording albums on Martin Stephenson's Barbaraville label. Displaying other talents Helen is not only an singer/songwriter but an author and film maker too! Check out her book "The Lost Women Of Rock Music: Female Musicians of the Punk Era" and her film "Stories From the She-Punks" which she released with co-conspirator Gina Birch. Now in 2019 we find Helen has just released a brand new LP 'Green' (Big Song), a 12 tune set of wonderful tales with incisive lyrical content. |
Drew Morrison and the Darkwood Website The house band are looking forward to treading the CSS boards once again. The Darkwood are Nick Steyn (drums), Ian Gant (guitar), George London (bass & singing) and songwriter Drew Morrison (guitar and singing). The band's central vision of a music touched by influences ranging from Alt Country, Pop & Rock N' Roll all tinged with 'golden chording' has remained focussed and realised itself into a unique sound. Expect to hear flashes of late 1960s Velvets, Jimmy Webb-esque wordplay and electrical guitar playing that has one foot in the 1950s and the other very much in the now. |
