About The Artists
Morton Valence

Website

We are delighted that Morton Valence will be playing at our 11th of August Country Soul special. There are no 2 voices that could be more different, yet blend more effortlessly than those of Anne Gilpin and Robert "Hacker" Jessett - aka Morton Valence.Veterans of 6 critically acclaimed studio albums, gleaning 4 star reviews in Mojo, Q, Uncut and The Sunday Times - to mention just 4 - and charting a restless 10-year musical journey, performing their genre-defying 'Urban Country' across the UK and Europe.Having released a new album earlier this year - 'Bob & Veronica's Great Escape' - Anne and Hacker haven't had the opportunity to perform it live, mainly due to the fact that they currently reside in different countries. So this Country Soul Session is a unique opportunity to catch Bob & Veronica playing songs from their 'Great Escape’, unplugged, pure, and for one night only. If you're a fan of MV, cancel anything else you may have planned, as this is a night you simply cannot miss.

Velvet Picturehouse

Website

We are extremely pleased that South London outfit Velvet Picturehouse will be playing at our August special. Fronted by songwriter/guitarist Mark Carter VP are an acoustic 4 piece ensemble with an electric mindset. Touches of blues, country, folk can be found in their music which is all played with a genuine and natural feel. Steve Harris guitar/mandolin, Ainsley Roberts bass/vocals and Craig Hilton on percussion complete the Velvet Picturehouse lineup.

Drew Morrison and the Darkwood

Website

The house band are looking forward to treading the CSS boards once again. The Darkwood are Nick Steyn (drums), Ian Gant (guitar), George London (bass & singing) and songwriter Drew Morrison (guitar and singing). The band's central vision of a music touched by influences ranging from Alt Country, Pop & Rock N' Roll all tinged with 'golden chording' has remained focussed and realised itself into a unique sound. Expect to hear flashes of late 1960s Velvets, Jimmy Webb-esque wordplay and electrical guitar playing that has one foot in the 1950s and the other very much in the now.
