About The Artists
Robert Rotifer & The Pétropolitans

Website

We are delighted to announce that Gare du Nord recording artist Robert Rotifer will be playing for us at the March Country Soul. Backed by The Pétropolitans a crack band of revolving musicians featuring the likes of Paul Pfleger (piano/keyboards), Ruth Tidmarsh (bass), Helen McCookerybook (backing vocals) and Ian Button (drums) Robert Rotifer will be playing tunes from his latest highly acclaimed long player ‘Holding Hands In Pétropolis’ (Gare du Nord, 2023). Mr Rotifer is well known for his descriptive pop lyrics and fine melodic sense so expect to hear top notch songwriting backed by a great band. Don’t miss them….

Son Of The Velvet Rat

Website

We are delighted that Son Of The Velvet Rat will be making their debut at the May Country Soul. SOTVR are songwriter Georg Altziebler and his wife Heike. Leaving the home town of Graz, Austria for the endless highway of America they finally settled in the wide open spaces of California's Mojave Desert in 2013. Georg's tunes build on the cabaret traditions of "Old World Masters" like Georges Brassens, Jacques Brel and Fabrizio De Andre but now are infused with the Old Testament and Kabbalistic visions conjured by such New World masters as Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Their 2017 debut long player 'Dorado' has been described as being "like some exotic desert fruit of indeterminate provenance -- equal parts ragged glory and brooding noir, the crepuscular glow of the violet horizon and blood pooled on a motel bathroom floor". Don't miss them.

Mark and The Clouds

Website

We are so pleased that Mark and the Clouds will be joining us for the May Country Soul. London based Mark and The Clouds play their own unique blend of Folk Rock and Psychedlia that can be heard in their two well received LP's 'Blue Skies Opening' & 'Cumulus' (Mega Dodo Records). Fronted by songwriter Marco Magnani the quartet also including John O' Sullivan, Shin Okajima & Javier Ayensa have gathered a fine reputation for their live performances and have been likened to such musical luminaires as Big Star, The Byrds and The Kinks.

Drew Morrison and the Darkwood

Website

The house band are looking forward to treading the CSS boards once again. The Darkwood are Nick Steyn (drums), Ian Gant (guitar), George London (bass & singing) and songwriter Drew Morrison (guitar and singing). The band's central vision of a music touched by influences ranging from Alt Country, Pop & Rock N' Roll all tinged with 'golden chording' has remained focussed and realised itself into a unique sound. Expect to hear flashes of late 1960s Velvets, Jimmy Webb-esque wordplay and electrical guitar playing that has one foot in the 1950s and the other very much in the now.
