About The Artists
Matthew Edwards and the Unfortunates

Website

We are delighted that Gare Du Nord recording artists Matthew Edwards and the Unfortunates will be making their debut at the Country Soul. Based in Birmingham Matthew and his band have been musically described as 'folk-pop noir'' with a lyrical bent that "recalls Kevin Ayers; all wry wit and melancholy" (Uncut). Their brand new long player 'Folklore' (Gare Du Nord) has been released to much acclaim. The LP itself is a musical happening where folk, mingles with stripped back pop and melodic hooks are shaped into a melancholy beauty.

Rapid Results College

Website

We are extremely pleased that Rapid College Results will also be debuting at the November Country Soul. Playing guitar based pop tunes RRC have a darker sound than their previous Hillfields incarnation. Their Gare Du Nord debut 'In City Light' was regarded as one of the best releases last year by Penny Black Music who described the LP as "a beautiful and subtle record". Poetic about modern City life, with tongue placed firmly in cheek, and musical influences ranging from XTC, Pavement, Scritti Politti and label pals Rotifer. Rapid College Results display a fine lyrical and musical sensibility.

Drew Morrison and the Darkwood

Website

The house band are looking forward to treading the CSS boards once again. The Darkwood are Nick Steyn (drums), Ian Gant (guitar), George London (bass & singing) and songwriter Drew Morrison (guitar and singing). The band's central vision of a music touched by influences ranging from Alt Country, Pop & Rock N' Roll all tinged with 'golden chording' has remained focussed and realised itself into a unique sound. Expect to hear flashes of late 1960s Velvets, Jimmy Webb-esque wordplay and electrical guitar playing that has one foot in the 1950s and the other very much in the now.
